Cookie consent for Joomla: install Cookifi in under 10 minutes

Joomla core has no banner, no Consent Mode and no consent log — tags go in through the head and run unconditionally. One free system plugin puts Cookifi there instead.

What you need

None. Joomla is self-hosted and HeadTag is free.

Install Cookifi on Joomla

  1. 1

    Install the HeadTag plugin

System → Install → Extensions and install the free 'HeadTag' system plugin from the Joomla Extensions Directory.

  2. 2

Add a rule for the Cookifi script

System → Manage → Plugins → 'System - HeadTag' → enable it, then add a rule: Tag Type = Script File, Source File = the Cookifi script URL, async on, assigned to all menu items and the Public access level. Save.

  3. 3

    Core alternative without a plugin

    In a child template's index.php call $wa->registerAndUseScript('cookifi', '<URL>', [], ['defer' => true]). Never edit templates/cassiopeia/index.php directly — it is overwritten on update.

Get your Cookifi script

  1. 1.

In the Cookifi admin click Add, enter a name and your domain — a sitemap URL is optional — and click Create.

  2. 2.

Open the property and copy the script under General → Integration script.

  3. 3.

Click the Google icon in the script toolbar to include the Consent Mode default command. The defaults themselves are set under Regions, together with URL Passthrough and Ads Data Redaction.

  4. 4.

Paste it as high in the <head> as the platform allows, on every page. Save, reload, and confirm the banner appears.

  5. 5.

If the platform strips data- attributes and the banner does not load, switch to Query string mode in the Installation script section and copy the script again.

  6. 6.

Cannot touch the head at all? Use the GTM Installation script in a Custom HTML tag with the Consent Initialization – All Pages trigger. Direct installation is still the recommendation, because ad blockers can suppress GTM.

Consent Mode v2 and GTM on Joomla

Joomla core has no GA4 or GTM integration, so tags arrive through the same head mechanism as the CMP. Worth knowing: the Web Asset Manager renders scripts at <jdoc:include type="scripts" /> ordered by dependency rather than by insertion, so check the served HTML to confirm Cookifi really is first.

What the native Joomla banner cannot do

Joomla ships no cookie banner of its own, so until you add a CMP nothing asks for consent and nothing holds a tag back.

Gotchas worth knowing

  • Editing templates/cassiopeia/index.php directly is overwritten on the next update — use a child template.
  • Cassiopeia's user.js loads after the template bundle, which is fine for a CMP loader but is not first in the head.
  • Many 'head code' extensions in the directory are Joomla 3 only or abandoned — check the Joomla 5 badge before installing one.

What you get with Cookifi

Live in under 10 minutes

One script in the head, a scan that suggests the categories for you, and a 14-day trial that needs no card.

A flat base, not a tier ladder

One monthly base from €10 plus usage on read events — the first 10,000 each month are free. Subdomains and team members are unlimited, so a second site is not a second plan.

Support that answers

Live chat and email on every plan, with a human response within one business day on Enterprise. We are a small team, which is why the things customers ask for tend to ship quickly.

Built for the modern stack

Google and Microsoft Consent Mode v2 are first-class, GA4 and GTM are the default path, and Cookifi is a Google-certified CMP partner.

Frequently asked questions

Which route should I choose?

HeadTag if you would rather not maintain a template, the Web Asset Manager call if you already run a child template. Both land the same script tag in the head.

Does Joomla have a privacy consent plugin that covers this?

Joomla's privacy tooling covers data requests and consent for forms. It is not a cookie banner and it does not gate third-party scripts.

How do I check the load order?

View the page source and confirm the Cookifi script appears before any analytics tag. The Web Asset Manager orders by dependency, so insertion order is not a guarantee.
